Planning for cleaner air and a healthier tomorrow
Rail emissions can significantly impact air quality at a local level, which is why it's a public health concern. To address this, we're developing a long-term plan for a clean and sustainable rail network, and ways to improve air quality at stations right now.
Understanding and fixing the problem
Levels of air pollution are high at some train stations. Pollution can make some passengers and staff unwell and discourage people from riding on trains altogether. So reducing air pollution at stations is very important. To tackle this, the Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN) was set up in 2022.
This program measures air quality at stations heavily serviced by diesel trains and experiencing the most polluted air quality levels. It also considers the levels of emissions from different train classes. The data gathered empowers us to collaborate with industry to develop Air Quality Improvement Plans for cleaner air.
As endorsed by the Sustainable Rail Executive, industry-wide collaboration is key to improving air quality. That's where we come in – as an independent organisation representing the rail sector, our trusted data can help everyone contribute to cleaner air.
Taking action for cleaner air
In collaboration with industry, we're working on a range of solutions to improve air quality, including:
- plans to improve air quality at stations
- for stations that need more support, we are working on tailored plans with the government, train companies, and station managers
- setting clear air quality goals for train stations, in partnership with the government, to promote cleaner air for all passengers and staff
- funding research into things like adopting new battery technologies and reducing train idling.
Looking to a clean future
Our data-driven approach informs long-term changes to make trains the best choice for the environment. This will be helped by industry collaboration. By working on these things now and planning for the future, we are showing our commitment to cleaner air and making working in rail and travelling by train better for everyone.
